Claudette Johnson has been an educator with the Peel District School Board as a secondary school teacher for over 36 years. With a B.A. in Psychology and Sociology from York University, and a B.Ed. from University of Toronto, she has distinguished herself throughout her teaching career as a mentor for students, parent advocate, guidance counsellor, and co-operative education teacher. Claudette has also served as Special Assistant in charge of equity through the Peel Board’s Head Office, addressing issues relating to women, visible minorities, the developmentally challenged and First Nations groups. Claudette Johnson helped develop several of the Board’s initiatives around equity, diversity and social justice, such as “The Future We Want”, a training program for Peel staff, and a Mentorship Program that encourages marginalized high school youth to consider a career in education. Claudette’s pride and joy during her teaching career were her AfriCanada Youth Club and Breakfast Program initiatives. The AfriCanada Youth Club addressed issues impacting Black youth through the coordination of guest speakers, conferences, the mentoring of younger students, and the organization of various cultural events. Claudette partnered with Breakfast for Learning, The Boys and Girls Club, and local food services to develop the Breakfast Program, which provided students with a healthy start to their school day. Claudette continues to dedicate much of her time to various community-based initiatives.
